This incident still gives me goosebumps, as though it happened now. This happened yesterday. My friend and I were coming out of Shoppers Stop at Andheri. Suddenly, my friend pointed on the road. That's when my heart skipped a beat. A small little 4-5 month old kitten just got run over by a car! I gasped. Before I finished gasping, another car passed over it! I couldn't control myself now. I rushed to the kitten immediately.
Her brain had been damaged. Blood was oozing out. There was already a pool of blood around her head. One of her eyes was already popping out. She was struggling, moving her hands and legs helplessly, counting her last breaths. I couldn't bear it.
I picked her up and held her in my hand. She was still moving her hands and legs helplessly. Within a few seconds, she stopped moving her hands and legs. Her body felt extremely light in my hands, as though she was relieved of the burden of this life. I was looking at her helplessly, not realising that I was in the middle of the bustling S.V. Road, at peak hours and my dear friend was standing behind me, diverting the traffic. I can see people passing by me, horrified at the sight of the dead kitten in my hands.
Suddenly, a hand comes on my shoulder. It's my friend Yogee. He asked me to leave her away from the road. I picked her up in my hands and laid her to rest on the divider. Thankfully, the divider was a feet high and had metal fencing. So, she would be safe. My friend consoled me, saying that she left for heaven in my arms. I'd liberated her. That, kind of, brought a small smile to my face. But, it disappeared again as I thought of my Kitten, my Oye.
Later the day, I spoke to Smruti. She consoled me saying the same thing that Yogee had said. She also assured me that Oye must've delivered 4 peppery kittens, just like her. That, did bring a smile on my face. The first time I'd actualy smiled that day... Somehow, she seems to know how to put the smile back on my face.
But, all said and done, I miss my Oye a lot.
That's my Oye, when she first came into my life, about 6 months, 17 days and 3 hours ago.
